The Origins of Christianity

The origin of Christianity dates back over two thousand years ago to the time of Christ Jesus. Since the time of Jesus the church has spread across the world taking many forms and opening up hundreds of different denominations. Throughout it all, however, Christianity remains one of the largest religions around with millions of believers worldwide.

The Time of Jesus

The origin of Christianity began with the birth of Jesus, the Son of God. The story of Jesus is found in the Holy Bible, which tells the story of Jesus growing up, teaching in the synagogues, performing miracles, and finding the original disciples who would eventually build the early church.

After Jesus was put to death on the cross around 30 A.D., he was resurrected and proven to be the Son of God. His followers spread the religion throughout the Middle East and started to prepare the way for Jesus’ return.

New Converts Added

Over the next 250 years, the number of followers continued to grow. Christianity mixed well with the major themes of Roman culture and greatly appealed to the poor as it pointed out problems with inequality and promised rewards after death.

The idea of heaven provided hope to many and created a purpose for people to put up with hardships in difficult times. Roman values had always taught the importance of ethical living and goals during the origin of Christianity, which helped the religion gain ground

Paul, one of Jesus' original followers, was a key leader in developing the early church. It was his influence that helped Christianity to separate from Judaism and turn into a universal religion. Missionaries began to move away from the Middle East to continue spreading the news of Jesus and the hope for a future.

Spreading Westward

Eventually, the western world was introduced to the origin of Christianity and news spread about Jesus' second coming. While the church was quite structured around Catholicism in the east, the western church developed in a very different fashion.

Missionaries poured westward and spread the gospel through controversial methods. The Crusades, in particular, were a series of military attacks put on by the Christian church in order to expand their sphere of influence.

The western world developed a Christianity that was divided into many different denominations with slight differences between them. Although the missionaries didn’t always spread the Gospel in the most appropriate fashion, they did build a foundation on which the church continued to grow.

The Origin of Christianity and What it Means to Us Today

Today, the Christian church has more than 1 billion members worldwide and continues to grow as it spreads the hope for an afterlife and provides purpose for living each and every day to its fullest.

While the origin of Christianity seems so distant to us today, it is still relevant to our world and our beliefs. Jesus will always remain the foundation of our faith and Christians will continue to spread the gospel while looking forward to Christ’s return.
